Traverse City, MI – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Wexford, and surrounding counties until 4 p.m. Saturday as snow and strong winds create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected, with winds gusting up to 35 mph. The strongest winds are anticipated during the morning hours, potentially leading to blowing snow and reduced visibility, especially in open areas.
Road conditions across northern Michigan are becoming increasingly treacherous, with slick surfaces reported on bridges and overpasses. Officials urge drivers to slow down and use caution while traveling. Strong wind gusts could also lead to downed tree branches, increasing the risk of power outages.
Residents are advised to bundle up and be cautious when stepping outside, as icy sidewalks and driveways could contribute to slip-and-fall injuries. The lake-effect snow bands may cause rapidly changing weather conditions, with periods of heavy snowfall followed by clear skies just a few miles away.
The advisory is set to expire by late afternoon, but lingering flurries and gusty winds may persist into the evening hours. Travelers should check road conditions before heading out and prepare for potential delays.
