Birmingham, AL – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of central Alabama due to dry and windy conditions, increasing the risk of wildfires. The warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. CST on Saturday, March 1.

According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, strong northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching 20 mph, combined with low relative humidity levels of around 20%, will create critical fire weather conditions. These factors make outdoor burning highly dangerous and strongly discouraged.

The warning covers a vast region, including Jefferson, Tuscaloosa, Shelby, Montgomery, and surrounding counties. Authorities urge residents to take precautions, as fires could spread quickly under these conditions.

Safety Precautions:

  • Avoid outdoor burning – Sparks can quickly ignite dry vegetation.
  • Secure loose items – Strong winds may spread embers easily.
  • Report fires immediately – Call 911 if you see uncontrolled flames.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and take preventative measures until conditions improve. Fire weather warnings are serious, and adhering to safety recommendations can prevent potential wildfire outbreaks.
