Detroit, MI – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across Southeast Michigan this evening, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and a low chance of isolated tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, the storm threat begins around 6 p.m. and continues through 11 p.m. Sunday, with the highest impacts expected in cities including Detroit, Ann Arbor, Flint, and Pontiac. The main hazards include wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail up to 1 inch, and locally heavy rainfall. Although the risk is classified as Level 2 out of 5 (Slight Risk), residents are urged to remain alert due to the potential for quick-developing storms.

The NWS advises having multiple ways to receive alerts, such as NOAA Weather Radio, smartphone notifications, or local news. Downed trees, power outages, and reduced visibility may occur during peak storm activity.

Motorists should avoid travel during severe storms and secure outdoor objects. While tornado chances are low, isolated rotation cannot be ruled out. This system marks an early-season spike in severe weather potential for the region.
