Detroit, Michigan – Travelers across southeast Michigan should stay alert Friday as scattered thunderstorms threaten to slow evening commutes and outdoor plans. The storms may bring heavy downpours in spots, creating slick stretches on I-75, I-94, and other major corridors just as traffic builds ahead of the Labor Day weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, the greatest storm risk will occur Friday afternoon into early evening. While widespread severe weather is not expected, gusty winds and brief heavy rain could reduce visibility for drivers. Storms will move from northwest to southeast, clearing the area by late evening.

Saturday marks a turning point, with sunshine and highs near 73 degrees expected across metro Detroit, Ann Arbor, and down through Monroe County. Sunday will warm into the upper 70s, while Labor Day Monday looks to be the warmest of the stretch with highs near 78 and clear skies, ideal for backyard cookouts and late-summer trips to Belle Isle or Lake St. Clair.

Residents should prepare for wet conditions Friday, allowing extra travel time and avoiding flooded low-lying roadways. After that, the holiday weekend offers mostly calm, dry weather that should make outdoor gatherings and travel across Michigan much easier.

The National Weather Service notes no hazardous weather is expected from Saturday through midweek, though another chance for showers may return Tuesday night into Wednesday.
