Bad Axe, Michigan – Drivers across Michigan’s Thumb are dealing with slick roads and sudden whiteout conditions this morning as lake effect snow continues to sweep inland off Lake Huron.
According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Huron and Sanilac counties until 10 a.m. Thursday. Bands of lake effect snow are producing additional accumulations up to one inch, but strong winds are creating the biggest concern. Wind gusts between 30 and 40 mph are leading to blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility, at times dropping to a half-mile or less.
Road conditions have deteriorated quickly in and around Bad Axe, Sandusky, and along rural stretches of M-53, M-19, and local county roads. Even brief bursts of heavier snow are enough to coat pavement and create icy patches, especially on bridges and open farm roads exposed to the wind.
The advisory coincides with the Thursday morning commute, increasing the risk of slide-offs and minor accidents. Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and remain alert for rapidly changing conditions, especially when traveling between snow bands.
Lake effect snow is expected to taper later this morning as winds gradually ease. However, lingering slick spots may persist into midday. Drivers are encouraged to check the MDOT Michigan Drive Map for the latest road conditions before heading out.
