Houghton, MI – A significant winter storm is bearing down on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with ice, snow, and strong winds expected to create hazardous conditions through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Keweenaw and Northern Houghton counties until 8 p.m. EDT Sunday. Forecasters expect total snow and sleet accumulations of up to 4 inches through Friday night, paired with ice accumulations reaching 0.3 inches. The heaviest freezing rain is anticipated to begin Friday evening, increasing the likelihood of downed trees and power outages.
Saturday night into Sunday may bring an additional 5 inches of wet snow, with wind gusts as high as 40 mph further complicating road conditions and raising the risk of scattered outages.
Travel across the region—especially during the Friday evening and weekend commutes—could become very difficult or even impossible at times. Residents in Copper Harbor, Hancock, and surrounding communities are urged to avoid non-essential travel and prepare for emergency conditions.
Officials recommend keeping extra flashlights, food, and water in vehicles and at home. Power companies in the area are monitoring conditions and preparing for response efforts in case of widespread outages.
