Marquette, Michigan – Spring rain and snow could spell travel trouble and rising river levels in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula starting Sunday and lasting through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, snowmelt combined with moderate rainfall is expected to cause rises on area rivers, with minor flooding possible along flood-prone zones near US-41 and surrounding low-lying routes. Beginning Sunday evening, rain chances increase sharply—peaking at 90% Monday—with snow possible Monday night into early Tuesday across the western U.P., including Gogebic, Baraga, and Houghton counties.

Motorists should prepare for reduced visibility and slick roads, especially Monday night into Tuesday morning. Avoid driving through water-covered roads, and monitor local emergency alerts for any road closures or detours.

Snow accumulation is most likely late Monday into early Tuesday across higher elevations west of Marquette. Daytime highs will remain in the 40s, but nighttime temperatures drop into the mid-30s, increasing the potential for overnight icing.

This storm system follows a week of mostly mild spring weather. With more showers expected midweek, outdoor Easter plans on Sunday may be interrupted by spotty rain in the evening, especially near Sawyer International Airport and along M-28.
