Marquette, Michigan – Warm air, dry brush, and gusty winds are combining into a dangerous fire setup for Upper Michigan on Tuesday — and conditions may not ease until midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, elevated to critical fire weather conditions will persist through Tuesday evening across much of central and western Upper Michigan, including counties along M-28 such as Marquette, Baraga, Alger, and Houghton. Daytime highs will climb into the upper 70s to low 80s with southerly wind gusts reaching 25 mph. The result: any outdoor fire activity could rapidly spread.

The NWS has warned that the risk is highest between noon and 8 p.m. Tuesday, when relative humidity will dip below 25% and winds stay strong. These Red Flag-style conditions make outdoor burning dangerous. Residents are urged to avoid campfires, burn barrels, or equipment that may spark.

Looking ahead, relief may arrive late Wednesday as cloud cover increases and winds begin to calm. Scattered showers are likely Thursday night into Friday, with highs gradually falling into the mid-60s by week’s end. Cooler nights will return with lows in the 40s starting Friday.

  • Thursday: Showers likely, 71°F
  • Friday: Cooler, 64°F, chance of rain
