Detroit, MI – Thick, gray skies and a steady curtain of light snow settle across southeast Michigan this morning, coating roadways and windshields as the region sees its first true December accumulation. The National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac expects 1 to 2 inches of snow through early afternoon, enough to make morning and midday travel slow and slippery.

Snow will continue on and off through midday Sunday, gradually tapering west to east by late afternoon as drier air filters in. Winds from the northwest up to 15 mph may briefly reduce visibility, particularly on I-75, I-94, and I-96. Road crews are active, but bridges and untreated side streets could become slick as temperatures hover in the upper 20s.

By Monday, skies clear with a crisp chill — highs only near 26°F, but abundant sunshine helps with melting. However, a new system approaching Tuesday could bring a rain–snow mix that transitions back to snow Tuesday night, marking another early-week travel concern.

Looking ahead, long-range models suggest the Great Lakes region could face an Arctic blast between December 11–17, dropping temperatures well below seasonal averages and triggering lake-effect snow across Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

Five-Day Outlook (Detroit, MI)

  • Monday: Mostly sunny, high 26°F.
  • Tuesday: Chance of snow, high 36°F.
  • Wednesday: Rain and snow likely, high 39°F.
  • Thursday: Cloudy, high 30°F.
  • Friday: Chance of snow, high 28°F.
