Michigan drivers face significant disruptions starting Thursday, June 27, as major closures on I-75 in Detroit will impact northbound and southbound traffic for several days. These closures are critical for the ongoing construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
According to a recent announcement from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Gordie Howe International Bridge authorities, the northbound I-75 on-ramp from Springwells Street to northbound I-75 will close at 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, remaining shut until 5 a.m. on Monday, June 30. Northbound I-75 will also experience a full closure between Springwells Street and Clark Street during the same timeframe. Additionally, the left lane on southbound I-75 will close between Springwells Street and Clark Street from Friday, June 28, through Sunday, June 29.
Commuters should prepare for detours. Northbound I-75 traffic will be directed east on Fort Street, then north on Clark Street to regain access to northbound I-75. These closures are essential to allow for finishing work on the new international bridge. Drivers should plan extra travel time, especially if heading to or from Canada, and consider alternate routes to avoid congestion.
MDOT advises checking real-time traffic updates through its MiDrive system or the Gordie Howe International Bridge project website for the latest information. Further advisories may follow as construction progresses toward the bridge’s anticipated opening in fall 2025.
