Marquette, Mich. – Residents across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula should prepare for a wave of strong to severe thunderstorms beginning as early as 6 p.m. Sunday, with large hail and damaging winds possible through the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, storms are expected to push into the western U.P. by early evening and continue eastward into Monday morning. The strongest activity is likely between 8 p.m. and midnight, especially across north-central and eastern counties.

Cities including Ironwood, Houghton, Marquette, and Escanaba could see hail over one inch in diameter and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. Isolated afternoon storms may develop ahead of the main line, bringing localized hazards during daytime hours.

The NWS has outlined heightened risk areas in yellow and green on its outlook map, emphasizing the need for residents to remain alert. Travelers are urged to avoid unnecessary driving during peak storm periods, and those without weather radios should enable alerts on mobile devices.

Conditions will remain hot and humid during the day, compounding the storm risk. More updates or warnings may follow as the evening progresses. Severe weather alerts remain in effect across the U.P. through early Monday.
