Marquette, MI – A powerful winter storm swept across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, dumping up to 24 inches of snow in some areas and bringing strong winds up to 47 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, the highest snowfall totals were recorded in Marquette County, where the city of Negaunee saw 24 inches of snow as of Thursday morning. Other significant snowfall amounts included 20 inches in Baraga County’s Mount Avon, 15.8 inches in Houghton County’s Painesdale, and 15.2 inches in Ironwood, located in Gogebic County.
Winds also caused hazardous conditions, with the highest gust recorded at 47 mph along the Munising Lakeshore in Alger County. Other notable wind speeds included 45 mph at the Escanaba River Bridge in Delta County and 43 mph at Sawyer Airport in Marquette County.
The heavy snow and strong winds led to difficult travel conditions, with snow-covered roads and reduced visibility across the region. Residents are advised to use caution when traveling and to check local road conditions before heading out.
With winter weather continuing, authorities recommend keeping emergency kits in vehicles and staying updated on forecasts as more snow and wind are expected in the coming days.
