Pennfield Township, MI – A man from Kalamazoo died Sunday morning following a reported altercation and gunfire incident in a Pennfield Township neighborhood.
According to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 11:37 a.m. to a shots fired call in the 21000 block of North Avenue. Authorities said the caller reported two men were allegedly involved in a physical confrontation, during which one of them fired a weapon. Family members, including children and a bedridden individual, had reportedly locked themselves in a room to stay safe.
Deputies found a 35-year-old man in the driveway and placed him in a patrol vehicle for further questioning. While officers worked to secure the scene, the man reportedly experienced a medical emergency inside the vehicle. Despite efforts by deputies, paramedics, and firefighters, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials confirmed he had been involved in the altercation and was struck by the discharged firearm.
A 45-year-old Battle Creek man was taken into custody in connection with allegedly firing the weapon. Authorities confirmed no other individuals were injured by the gunfire.
Detectives from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, with support from the Michigan State Police, are continuing the investigation. The cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner’s office. It remains unclear whether the altercation contributed to the fatal medical event.
