Ann Arbor, MI – A 79-year-old Ann Arbor man was struck and killed by a vehicle late Monday night while crossing a downtown intersection in a wheelchair.

According to the Ann Arbor Police Department, officers responded around 11:58 p.m. to the intersection of North Fourth Avenue and East Huron Street, where they found the victim with critical injuries after being hit by a white SUV. Police said the man was crossing E. Huron at N. Fourth when the traffic signal changed, and he was struck while still in the crosswalk. First responders from AAFD and HVA assisted at the scene and transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the SUV, a 22-year-old Ann Arbor woman, allegedly fled the scene before officers arrived. She later turned herself in to authorities. Alcohol is allegedly being investigated as a factor in the collision. The suspect is currently being held at the Washtenaw County Jail.

The investigation remains active, and police have not released the names of those involved as of Tuesday morning.
