Dearborn, MI – As July 4th approaches, Dearborn officials have unveiled a strict zero-tolerance policy on illegal firework use, promising enhanced police presence, citations, and community outreach efforts aimed at ensuring safety during the holiday weekend.

According to a press conference held Thursday, Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, Police Chief Issa Shahin and Fire Chief Joseph Murray announced a coordinated enforcement and education campaign to deter reckless fireworks activity from June 29 through July 5.

“We’re asking for the support of the community, the families, and the parents to ensure that our young people are acting appropriately,” Mayor Hammoud said. “We’ve had rising concerns over July 4th celebrations in recent years.”

The City emphasized its ordinances, which mirror state law, restricting fireworks use to private property between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m., and strictly banning use on public streets, schools, and parks. Violations could result in court appearances or jail time.

According to Chief Shahin, dozens of additional officers and emergency response teams will be deployed citywide. “There’s going to be a different posture from the Police Department this year,” he said. “The conduct we’ve seen on the streets on July 4th in the last two years has been totally unacceptable.”

Fire Chief Murray urged families to attend professional displays and avoid home use. “Fireworks may be legal, but they are not safe,” he said, citing thousands of national injuries and over 19,000 fires linked to fireworks annually.

The City has also sent letters to residents, particularly parents, stressing local laws and enforcement plans. Officers will issue misdemeanor citations to parents of unsupervised children found using fireworks illegally.

A city-sponsored fireworks display will take place Saturday, July 5, from 10 p.m. at Camp Dearborn in Milford.
