Monroe, MI – The Monroe County Health Department has issued a full-body beach water advisory for Sterling State Park after detecting high levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) in the park’s waters.

Chris Westover, Environmental Health Director, reported that water samples collected Tuesday showed E. coli levels surpassing Michigan’s safety standards. Health officials are urging park visitors to stay out of the water, especially if they have cuts, scrapes, or weakened immune systems. Pets should also be kept away from the contaminated water.

Exposure to E. coli can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, cramps, and fever. There’s also a risk of skin infections if E. coli enters through open wounds. Officials are advising caution when eating fish from the lake and recommend immediate washing if contact occurs.

The Health Department will continue testing the water throughout the week, with new results expected Wednesday. The advisory will remain in place until E. coli levels drop to safe levels. Residents can check for updates at healthymonroecounty.com.
