Detroit, MI – Temperatures will سقوط quickly to near freezing by 2 a.m. Sunday, triggering widespread frost that could damage crops and sensitive plants across Michigan before the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Detroit/Pontiac and Grand Rapids, a Frost Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m. Sunday statewide. A more severe Freeze Watch begins Sunday evening and lasts through Monday morning, when temperatures could fall as low as 20°F.

By sunrise Sunday, cities including Detroit, Flint, Ann Arbor, Lansing, and Grand Rapids will see frost formation on exposed surfaces, with readings near 33°F in southeast Michigan and as low as 26°F in western areas like Muskegon and Kalamazoo. Rural and low-lying locations will cool fastest, increasing the risk to crops. Roads will remain mostly dry, but drivers may encounter frost-covered windshields and patchy ground fog along I-94, I-96, and US-131.

The most significant impacts arrive Sunday night into Monday morning. Subfreezing temperatures near 20°F could kill unprotected vegetation and damage exposed plumbing across counties including Wayne, Oakland, Kent, and Ingham. Residents should cover plants, bring sensitive vegetation indoors, and insulate or drain outdoor pipes.

Conditions improve after 10 a.m. Sunday, but another sharp temperature drop begins after sunset. Additional alerts may be issued as the hard freeze approaches Monday morning.
