Orange Township, MI – A single-vehicle crash early Thursday morning on E. Grand River Avenue near Gregory Road claimed the life of one man and left another severely injured, authorities reported.
According to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 6:45 a.m. when a Ford F-150 carrying five male occupants lost control, veered off the road, and struck a ditch. The truck reportedly rolled before coming to a stop.
Emergency responders, including the Berlin-Orange Fire Department and LIFE EMS, arrived on the scene. One passenger was transported to the University of Michigan Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, where he was pronounced deceased. Another passenger sustained severe injuries and was transferred from U of M Ionia Hospital to U of M Sparrow for further treatment but is expected to survive.
The driver, a 27-year-old Grand Rapids man, and two other occupants escaped with minor injuries. He was arrested and jailed on one count of moving violation causing death, pending formal charges and arraignment.
Authorities believe excessive speed and failure to wear seat belts contributed to the crash. Alcohol and drugs were not suspected as factors.
The investigation is ongoing. Assisting at the scene were Reed and Hoppes Towing and the Ionia County Medical Examiner’s Office.
