Oakland County, Mich. – A Livonia family endured two tragic, unrelated events within 24 hours, leaving one dead and another critically injured.

On Thursday, a 66-year-old man fell through the ice while fishing with his grandson on Lake George in Addison Township. Rescuers pulled him from the water, but he remains in critical condition. His grandson, 15, was saved with the help of a quick-thinking neighbor who used a kayak to reach them.

On Friday, the man’s 66-year-old wife died in a head-on collision in Oakland Township. Authorities say a 19-year-old driver crossed the center line on Rochester Road and struck the vehicle she was in. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle was airlifted to a hospital and is in stable condition. A Clarkston couple, also involved in the crash, sustained injuries but survived.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy that has befallen this family in a very short time,” said Sheriff Michael Bouchard. “It’s hard to wrap your hands around it. Our prayers are with the family.”

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate both incidents.
