MIAMI, Fla. – Breezy northeast winds are creating hazardous beach conditions along South Florida’s Atlantic coast today, with the National Weather Service in Miami warning of a high risk of rip currents along Palm Beach County and a moderate risk farther south through Broward and Miami-Dade.
According to the NWS, persistent north to northeast winds are pushing stronger surf toward the coastline, producing dangerous currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore. The highest risk stretches from Jupiter Inlet south to Boca Raton, while moderate rip currents will affect beaches from Fort Lauderdale to Miami Beach through tonight.
Beachgoers are urged to swim only near lifeguards and heed warnings from local officials. Red and yellow flags may be posted to indicate hazardous surf and strong currents. Even experienced swimmers can be quickly overpowered by rip currents, especially during falling tides and periods of rough surf.
Conditions will gradually improve late Thursday as winds ease, but caution is advised for anyone entering the water through midweek. Boaters and paddleboarders should also use extra care navigating near inlets, where choppy waves and swift outflows are likely.
