Memphis, Tenn. – The Mid-South will contend with a dangerous combination of extreme heat and isolated strong thunderstorms Friday as heat index values climb as high as 109 degrees before storms develop later in the day. Residents across eastern Arkansas, northwest Mississippi and west Tennessee should prepare for hazardous outdoor conditions through the afternoon, followed by the potential for damaging wind gusts into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday for portions of eastern Arkansas and northwest Mississippi, including areas near Forrest City and Clarksdale. Heat index values above 105 degrees, and as high as 109 degrees, could increase the risk of heat-related illness for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
By 3 p.m., isolated thunderstorms are expected to begin developing mainly along and northwest of the Mississippi River before tracking from northwest to southeast through the evening. The strongest storms could continue until 11 p.m., with the primary hazard being wind gusts exceeding 60 mph. Localized heavy rainfall may also produce minor flooding in poor drainage areas.
The greatest chance for stronger storms includes Memphis, Dyersburg, Jonesboro, Paragould, Blytheville and nearby communities. While severe hail and tornadoes are not expected to be widespread, any stronger storm could still produce dangerous lightning, brief torrential rainfall and isolated tree damage from high winds.
Residents are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles. As thunderstorms develop later Friday, secure loose outdoor objects and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
Storm coverage is expected to remain isolated, but any storm that develops could become briefly strong. Additional weather advisories or warnings may be issued Friday afternoon and evening if conditions become more favorable for severe weather.
