Memphis, TN – A body was recovered Wednesday from a lake near the Memphis Police Department’s Austin Peay precinct, prompting a coordinated effort among local law enforcement and emergency agencies.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, its Search and Rescue Unit assisted both the Memphis Police Department and Memphis Fire Department in the recovery operation, which took place in the lake fronting Highway 14. The agency confirmed the effort occurred earlier today, though the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the incident have not yet been released.
Photos shared by the sheriff’s office show personnel using boats and rescue equipment during the recovery process, with officers and divers entering the water as emergency vehicles and trailers staged nearby.
Authorities have not confirmed whether foul play is suspected, and further information regarding how the body was discovered or how long it may have been in the water is currently unavailable. Investigators are expected to conduct a follow-up assessment to determine the cause of death, and the body will likely be turned over to the medical examiner for further evaluation.
The lake is adjacent to a public pedestrian area and in close proximity to MPD facilities, prompting attention from local residents as the operation unfolded.
This remains an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Memphis Police or the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
