Medford, Oregon – A surge of thunderstorms and dry lightning could spark new wildfires across southern Oregon and far northern California between 2 and 11 p.m. Wednesday, putting Medford, Grants Pass, the Rogue Valley, and Modoc County on high alert for fast-moving fire starts.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for Jackson, Josephine, and eastern Douglas counties, as well as Modoc County, California, with isolated to scattered thunderstorms expected. Winds gusting 35 to 50 mph may drive flames up to 25 miles from lightning strikes, even outside the rain zones.
Residents from Ashland and the Illinois Valley to Yreka and Alturas should be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. Pack go-kits with vital documents and essentials, fill up fuel tanks, and review your emergency plan. Charge devices and sign up for local alerts at weather.gov/medford/wildfire. Follow all fire restrictions and avoid outdoor activities that could spark a blaze.
The threat of new fire starts extends through at least Thursday evening, with additional Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches possible. Stay updated as alerts may be upgraded or extended if storms linger.
