Charlotte, NC – A routine traffic stop in Mecklenburg County on Wednesday led to the arrest of a driver and the seizure of multiple firearms and marijuana, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the sheriff’s office, the stop occurred on April 29, 2026, when a deputy assigned to the Traffic Team observed a vehicle make an unsafe movement. After initiating the stop, the deputy reportedly detected the odor of marijuana, prompting a search of the vehicle as additional deputies arrived on scene.
Authorities say the search uncovered marijuana in the glove box, along with a Diamondback AR-15 rifle in the trunk. Deputies also reported finding a concealed handgun inside a diaper bag and three magazines stored in a separate bag.
The driver was taken into custody and transported to the Mecklenburg County Arrest Processing Center. Officials have not released the identity of the suspect or specific charges as of Thursday.
“This is a clear example of how proactive traffic enforcement helps keep our community safe,” Sheriff Garry McFadden said in a statement. “What began as a traffic stop resulted in dangerous weapons and drugs being removed from our streets.”
The sheriff’s office emphasized that traffic enforcement remains a key strategy in addressing unsafe driving and preventing broader criminal activity across the Charlotte area and Mecklenburg County.
No injuries were reported during the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
