Cedar Lake, IN – Drivers traveling along U.S. 41 in Lake County should prepare for ongoing lane closures and shifting traffic patterns beginning this week as a major road construction project gets underway near 151st Avenue.

According to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), construction on a reduced conflict intersection (RCI) will begin on or after Monday, May 4. Initial work will include pre-phase construction such as building a temporary ditch to improve drainage within the median, with lane shifts expected during this stage.

By Friday, May 8, outside lanes in both directions of U.S. 41 will close as crews begin phase one. Traffic will be moved to inside lanes while work continues on shoulders, turn lanes, drainage systems, and other infrastructure. During this phase, access to and from 151st Avenue will be restricted, with the road eventually closing once traffic transitions to phase two.

Traffic is expected to remain in this configuration through mid-July. At that point, vehicles will shift to the outside lanes for phase two construction, which includes building a raised median island and additional drainage improvements. The final phase, scheduled for mid-August, will involve resurfacing the roadway.

INDOT officials say U.S. 41 will maintain at least one lane of traffic in each direction throughout construction. However, the median will remain closed until the project wraps up, which is expected in September.

Motorists are advised to stay alert, follow posted signage, and allow extra travel time through the area as conditions change.
