Boston, MA – A band of freezing rain continues to affect parts of western and northern Massachusetts, creating slick roadways and potential travel hazards early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. EDT for Franklin, Northern Worcester, Western Hampshire, and Northern Middlesex counties. Ice accumulations are expected to reach up to one-tenth of an inch, primarily impacting elevated surfaces and untreated roadways.

Communities including Greenfield, Fitchburg, Chesterfield, Barre, and Ayer are experiencing conditions that may lead to difficult travel. Emergency officials urge residents to delay non-essential travel and exercise extreme caution if driving.

Freezing rain during early spring is not unusual for this region but still poses a threat due to variable road treatments and fluctuating temperatures. While power outages have not been widely reported, the advisory notes potential risks from ice accumulation on power lines and trees.

Drivers are advised to reduce speeds, allow extra travel time, and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. Pedestrians should watch for icy sidewalks and steps.

Conditions are expected to improve by midday as temperatures rise above freezing. Stay tuned to local alerts for updates on roadway conditions and any changes to the advisory status.
