Plattsburgh, NY — A wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow is creating hazardous travel conditions across northern New York and northwest Vermont, prompting a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, affected areas include Northern Franklin and Northern St. Lawrence counties in New York, along with Eastern Clinton, Grand Isle, and portions of Franklin and Chittenden counties in Vermont. Ice accumulation between one and two-tenths of an inch is expected, especially in colder, sheltered valleys.
Motorists should anticipate slick roads and potential delays, particularly in areas like Malone, Massena, Plattsburgh, St. Albans, and Burlington. Tree limbs may become weighed down with ice, leading to isolated power outages.
Precipitation is expected to shift to plain rain by Sunday afternoon in most areas, but temperatures in Vermont’s interior valleys may remain below freezing much longer, extending icy conditions into the evening.
Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, reduce speed on roadways, and monitor local traffic updates at 511NY.org and NewEngland511.org. Pedestrians are also advised to use caution on untreated sidewalks and driveways.
