Boston, MA – Parts of northern Massachusetts are bracing for light icing and freezing rain, with elevated areas such as the northern Worcester Hills expected to see up to 0.20 inches of ice accumulation by early Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, freezing rain will begin late Saturday and persist into Sunday morning, primarily affecting higher terrain in counties like Franklin and northern Worcester. The heaviest ice totals, ranging from 0.10 to 0.20 inches, are forecast across areas near Greenfield and Fitchburg.

Light icing can still create dangerous conditions on untreated roads and sidewalks, especially in elevated and shaded areas. Motorists are urged to use caution when traveling overnight Saturday and into early Sunday. Black ice may develop, especially before sunrise when temperatures remain near or below freezing.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts and prepare for possible power line or tree damage in zones with the heaviest icing. Although widespread power outages are not expected, isolated issues could occur.

The storm system responsible is tracking across the Northeast and could bring similar icing to neighboring states like southern Vermont and southwestern New Hampshire. This event comes amid a colder-than-normal spring transition across interior New England.
