Boston, Massachusetts – Strong to damaging wind gusts are expected across much of Massachusetts today, with the highest impacts forecast in central and western parts of the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston, a High Wind Warning remains in effect for the east slopes of the Berkshires and the Worcester Hills, while a Wind Advisory covers the remainder of southern New England. Wind headlines are scheduled to remain in place through 1 a.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters say sustained west winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts peaking between 45 and 60 mph, especially from mid-morning through mid-afternoon. The strongest winds are most likely between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., when tree damage and scattered power outages become more likely.
High terrain areas, including communities near Worcester, Fitchburg, Springfield, and Pittsfield, are expected to see the strongest gusts. Even lower elevations, including the Boston metro area, may experience gusts strong enough to blow around unsecured objects.
The gusty winds will also usher in colder air, resulting in low wind chill temperatures despite seasonable daytime highs. Residents are urged to dress appropriately if spending time outdoors and to secure loose holiday decorations, trash bins, and other outdoor items.
Utility crews are on alert as downed trees and power lines could lead to isolated outages, particularly in areas with saturated soils or weaker trees.
Drivers of high-profile vehicles should exercise caution on east-west roadways, bridges, and exposed highways due to sudden crosswinds.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve overnight as winds diminish late tonight into early Wednesday.
