Charlemont, Massachusetts – Dangerous Arctic cold remains locked over western Massachusetts Saturday, keeping parts of the Berkshires under a heightened cold threat as biting wind chills persist into the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. EST for the eastern slopes of the Berkshire Mountains, including western Franklin, western Hampshire, and western Hampden counties. Wind chills are dropping as low as 25 below zero, conditions capable of causing frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

The cold is most severe in higher terrain and exposed areas near Charlemont, Chesterfield, and Blandford, where wind-enhanced chill values remain dangerous even after sunrise. Outdoor workers, hikers, and residents running errands face elevated risk without proper cold-weather protection. Prolonged exposure could also lead to hypothermia, especially for those without adequate shelter.

Emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and fully cover exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face coverings. Even short periods outside can become hazardous under these conditions.

Temperatures are expected to slowly moderate later this afternoon as winds ease, but cold conditions will linger across the region. Officials advise staying alert for updates in case additional cold-related advisories are issued.
