Boston, Massachusetts – Commuters and utility crews across eastern Massachusetts are preparing for power outage risks and tree damage Monday night as a powerful burst of wind arrives with a cold front capable of producing gusts up to 60 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, winds will steadily increase throughout Monday before peaking Monday night as a strong cold front crosses New England. Southerly winds are expected to reach 45 to 60 mph, with the strongest gusts focused across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including the Boston metro area and the South Shore.

The strengthening wind field could make travel difficult on major corridors including Interstates 93, 95, and the Massachusetts Turnpike, especially on bridges and exposed roadways. Drivers of trucks, buses, and other high-profile vehicles may experience sudden crosswinds.

Cities such as Boston, Worcester, Providence, New Bedford, and Plymouth could see scattered tree damage if gusts reach the higher end of projections. Utility crews warn that saturated soil combined with strong winds increases the risk of downed branches and localized outages.

A few thunderstorms may also develop along the cold front Monday night, briefly intensifying wind gusts before the system moves offshore. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge mobile devices, and prepare for possible power disruptions as the strongest winds arrive late Monday.
