Massachusetts begins the day under a dim winter sky as light snow dusts cars and crunches underfoot. Pavement looks manageable at first glance, but slick spots linger, and a more complicated setup develops heading into Sunday and beyond.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect this morning across much of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and northern Connecticut. Additional snow accumulations remain light, generally up to one inch, but cold surface temperatures keep roads slippery through the morning commute.
Across southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including Providence and nearby communities, light snow tapers while highs struggle to reach the upper 20s. Roads may improve briefly during the afternoon, though shaded areas, bridges, and untreated side streets stay icy. Drivers should continue slowing down and allowing extra space.
Attention then turns to Sunday. Clouds thicken during the day with highs climbing toward the upper 30s. That warming trend helps melt leftover snow but sets up a bigger travel concern by Sunday night. Precipitation returns as freezing rain before transitioning to rain, especially after sunset.
Sunday night travel could become hazardous quickly. Freezing rain may coat roads, sidewalks, and power lines with a light glaze before temperatures rise. Routes like I-95, I-195, and local connectors through Bristol and Plymouth counties could see sudden slowdowns. Plan ahead if traveling late or returning home.
Rain becomes steadier Monday, with highs near 50 degrees, washing away snow but creating ponding on roads. Cooler air follows again by Tuesday, dropping highs near 30 and raising the risk of refreezing moisture and black ice during early drives.
Looking ahead, New Year’s Eve on Wednesday appears dry but cold, with highs in the low 30s as 2026 approaches. Winter weather patterns remain active. Traveling Sunday night or early next week? Tell us what road conditions look like where you are.
