Massachusetts – Cold air bites hard this morning, cracking lips and fogging breath across eastern Massachusetts. Streets look quiet, but the stillness won’t last. A powerful winter storm is lining up, and conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly heading into Sunday and Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect early as wind chills dip as low as 15 below zero across much of southern New England. A Winter Storm Warning follows, running from Sunday morning through Monday evening. Snow totals between 13 and 19 inches are expected across eastern and central Massachusetts, including Boston, with gusty winds reaching near 35 mph.
Temperatures start the day in the single digits and teens, keeping surfaces frozen solid. Snow begins Sunday morning and intensifies through the afternoon and evening. Heavy snowfall rates and blowing snow will sharply reduce visibility, especially along I-93, I-90, and I-95. Bridges and overpasses will turn slick fast.
Travel may become difficult to impossible at times. Plows may struggle to keep pace during peak snowfall. Flash freezing remains a serious concern, as any brief melting refreezes quickly after dark. The Monday morning and evening commutes could see widespread delays or cancellations.
Residents should prepare now. Avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm. Charge devices, stock essentials, and make a plan for snow removal. Keep vehicles fueled and emergency kits ready if travel can’t be postponed.
Snow tapers late Monday, but cold air lingers into midweek. Temperatures stay below normal, and snow piles will be slow to melt. Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook suggests drier conditions, though cold remains locked in across New England.
More advisories or updates are likely as snowfall bands set up.
