Silver Spring, MD – The National Weather Service (NWS) has announced a proposal to terminate Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts (TAFs) at two Massachusetts airports: Falmouth Joint Base Cape Cod (KFMH) and Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport (KBAF). This change is being considered due to a significant decline in non-military traffic at these airports.
The NWS cites a substantial reliance on military operations for aircraft traffic at these airports, with statistics showing that civilian operations no longer justify the continuation of TAF services. The proposed termination for Falmouth Joint Base Cape Cod is set for on or before October 1, 2025.
The NWS is soliciting public comments on this proposed change, with feedback due by April 30, 2025. The affected TAFs are identified as FTUS41 KBOX for both locations. Stakeholders, including aviation industry professionals and local residents, are encouraged to provide input on the potential impacts of the discontinuation.
For questions or to submit comments, individuals can contact Kristie Smith at NWS Headquarters or Andy Nash, Meteorologist in Charge at NWS WFO Boston/Norton.
More information on this proposal can be found at NWS Notification.
