Baltimore, MD – A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for Garrett County and surrounding areas. Residents can expect frigid wind chills as low as -15 degrees this morning, followed by even colder conditions tonight.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory will lift at 11 a.m. Tuesday but resume at 6 p.m., lasting through noon Wednesday. During this period, wind chills could drop to a dangerous -19 degrees, significantly increasing risks of hypothermia and frostbite. The advisory also affects parts of Virginia and West Virginia, including Highland, Grant, and Pendleton Counties.

Officials recommend limiting outdoor exposure, wearing layered clothing, and using hats and gloves to reduce risks. Portable heaters should be used with caution to avoid fire hazards. Residents are urged to bring pets indoors and ensure outdoor animals have warm, dry shelter and access to food and unfrozen water.

The cold wave will also impact travel, making frostbite a concern for anyone stranded outdoors. Drivers are advised to carry emergency supplies, including blankets and extra clothing. Those using generators or outdoor heating devices should avoid operating them indoors to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Emergency management teams encourage residents to check on vulnerable neighbors and elderly relatives. With temperatures remaining below freezing, these precautions could save lives.
