Baltimore, Maryland – Phones, NOAA Weather Radios, and alert systems across Maryland will activate at 10 a.m. today as part of a statewide tornado drill, a test designed to ensure residents can respond quickly when seconds matter.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, the drill is part of Maryland’s Severe Storms Awareness Week and will simulate a tornado warning broadcast across NOAA Weather Radio. The goal is to prompt households, schools, and businesses to practice their emergency plans in real time.
Communities from Baltimore to Frederick and across the Eastern Shore are encouraged to treat the drill seriously. Residents should identify the lowest level of their home, move to an interior room away from windows, and review where to go if a real warning is issued. Mobile home residents are urged to plan ahead for sturdier shelter locations.
Maryland averages dozens of tornado reports over the past decade, with storms capable of producing anything from localized damage to widespread impacts.
The drill will conclude shortly after activation, but officials stress this is an opportunity to act now before peak severe weather season intensifies.
