Landover, MD – A pedestrian was fatally struck by a car late Wednesday morning in Prince George’s County.
The Maryland State Police identified the victim as Gwendolyn Mack, 60, of Upper Marlboro. Emergency responders transported Mack to Capital Regional Hospital, where medical staff pronounced her dead.
Authorities say the crash occurred just before 11:45 a.m. as Mack attempted to cross Landover Road at McCormick Drive. A black Dodge Challenger, driven by Derek Durham Jr., 28, of Upper Marlboro, struck her in the intersection. Police confirmed Durham was traveling in lane 4 at the time of the incident.
Durham and an unidentified passenger in his vehicle were uninjured and remained at the scene. Investigators with the Maryland State Police Crash Team responded and are leading the case.
Preliminary findings suggest the crash was an accident, but troopers are still gathering evidence. Police have not filed any charges against Durham.
Officials are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the Maryland State Police Forestville Barrack at 301-568-8101. Troopers hope witness accounts will help clarify the events leading up to the crash.
The Maryland State Police reminded drivers and pedestrians to remain alert at intersections. They also urged drivers to reduce speed in areas with heavy foot traffic to avoid similar tragedies.
The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details were immediately available.
