Maysville, WV – A Maryland State Police helicopter crew rescued a hunter who fell from a tree stand in West Virginia on Nov. 5. The hunter, whose injuries required urgent care, was stranded in a remote mountain area in Grant County, making rescue difficult.
Maryland State Police Aviation Command (MSPAC) responded to assist ground rescue teams at around 7 a.m. Due to the mountainous terrain and the severity of the hunter’s injuries, officials decided an aerial extraction was necessary. Trooper 5, an AgustaWestland AW-139 helicopter from Cumberland, Maryland, performed the rescue.
The helicopter crew lowered a Trooper/Rescue Technician to stabilize and package the injured hunter. After emergency medical personnel provided ground support, Trooper 5 hoisted the hunter from the forested area.
Following the successful extraction, Trooper 5 transported the hunter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, for further treatment and assessment. MSPAC, operating since 1970, provides essential aerial rescues, medevac, and law enforcement support in challenging terrains.
Maryland State Police emphasized the importance of their cooperative rescue efforts with local emergency services in complex operations like this.
