Baltimore, MD – Drivers traveling through Baltimore should plan for detours as a series of weekend-long ramp closures on I-895 near the Childs Street interchange begin this week.
The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) announced that the entrance ramp from Childs Street to southbound I-895 will be shut down temporarily, with traffic detoured to Frankfurst Avenue, then Hanover Street, and onto southbound I-95. Additionally, the exit to Childs Street from northbound I-895 will also be closed during the same periods.
According to the MDTA, the closures will take place during overnight weekend hours from 9 p.m. Friday to 4:30 a.m. Monday on the following dates:
- April 25 to April 28
- May 2 to May 5
- May 9 to May 12
A potential additional closure window is set for May 16 to May 19 in case of weather delays or unforeseen circumstances.
Officials advise drivers entering northbound I-895 south of the tunnel to avoid attempting to exit at Childs Street, as there will be no access prior to the I-895 Harbor Tunnel.
These closures are part of the ongoing I-895 at Frankfurst Avenue Interchange Improvements Project, which includes installing new toll gantries and upgrading ramps just north of the tunnel. This first stage of construction is expected to be completed by summer 2025.
Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes and stay alert for posted signs during this construction period. For more information and updates, visit mdta.maryland.gov/I895TollPlaza.
