Garrett County, MD – A significant winter storm is set to bring heavy snow and strong winds to Maryland and West Virginia beginning early Sunday morning. The storm is expected to last until 9 a.m. Monday, potentially disrupting travel and daily activities.

According to the National Weather Service, snowfall totals will range between 5 and 10 inches, with higher western slopes in Garrett County and West Virginia’s Western Grant and Western Pendleton Counties possibly seeing up to 12 inches. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph, causing blowing and drifting snow.

Snowfall will begin Sunday morning and intensify through the afternoon, with rates reaching up to 1 inch per hour. Conditions are expected to worsen overnight, with hazardous travel likely due to reduced visibility and slick roads.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. Those who must travel should carry an emergency kit, including a flashlight, food, and water, and take precautions such as allowing extra travel time and driving cautiously on hills and curves.

The National Weather Service advises travelers to check local road conditions by calling 511 and to ensure vehicles are winterized before heading out. The storm is expected to taper off Monday morning with lingering upslope snow showers.
