Elkins, WV – Heavy snow and high winds are forecast across central, northern, and southeastern West Virginia, as a winter storm warning remains in effect from 1 a.m. Sunday through 8 a.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Charleston, snowfall totals between 5 and 9 inches are expected, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph. A flash freeze is possible late Sunday night into Monday morning as temperatures rapidly drop, heightening travel risks.

The warning affects areas including Elkins, Buckhannon, Summersville, and Snowshoe. Hazardous conditions could significantly impact the Monday morning commute, especially in areas with higher elevations.

NWS advises motorists to carry emergency supplies, including flashlights, food, and water, if travel is necessary. Road conditions can be monitored by calling 511 or accessing the state’s traffic portal online.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated through NWS channels and prepare for potentially prolonged disruptions. This storm could mark one of the season’s most impactful weather events for the region.
