Marquette, MI – Snow and ice are already coating roads across the Upper Peninsula, with visibility dropping and slick conditions worsening ahead of the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect across much of the U.P. until 8 a.m. Friday, bringing 2 to 4 inches of snow and sleet along with up to 0.25 inches of ice in some areas. Wind gusts between 35 and 40 mph are increasing the خطر of falling tree limbs and scattered power outages, especially in Houghton, Ontonagon, and Baraga counties .
Communities including Marquette, Hancock, Iron Mountain, and Escanaba are seeing hazardous travel, particularly on untreated roads and elevated surfaces. Ice accumulation is expected to be heavier inland, while lakeshore areas may see slightly reduced totals. M-28, U.S. 41, and rural county roads are becoming increasingly slick as temperatures hold below freezing.
Drivers are urged to delay travel through early Friday if possible. Emergency kits with food, water, and flashlights are strongly recommended due to the risk of becoming stranded or losing power.
A second round of icing could arrive as early as Friday evening and continue into Saturday morning, with up to 0.40 inches of ice possible. Additional alerts are likely as conditions evolve.
