Marquette, Michigan – Wind gusts could exceed 60 mph in the Keweenaw Peninsula by late Friday afternoon, creating dangerous crosswinds on US-41 and the Portage Lake Lift Bridge before temperatures crash tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, strong west winds will rapidly intensify this afternoon and evening. There is a 60 percent chance of wind gusts topping 60 mph in the Keweenaw, with a 60 to 80 percent chance of gusts exceeding 45 mph along the Lake Superior shoreline, including Marquette, Munising and Grand Marais.

High-profile vehicles traveling along US-41 from Houghton to Copper Harbor face the greatest risk of sudden crosswinds. Blowing snow and falling tree limbs could briefly block stretches of M-28 east of Marquette. Power outages are possible where winds bring down tree branches and power lines.

Winds will peak between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday before gradually easing overnight. As colder air pours in behind the system, temperatures will plunge into the single digits above and below zero by early Saturday. Wind chills could fall between 0 and 10 below zero by sunrise Saturday, especially across open areas and higher terrain.

Lake effect snow showers may develop in northwest wind belts Saturday, adding slick spots to untreated roads.

Residents should secure outdoor objects immediately and avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind hours. Drivers should reduce speed, keep both hands on the wheel and remain alert for debris on roadways.

High wind headlines remain in effect through late Friday night, and additional advisories may be issued if gusts exceed projections.
