Manhunt Ends: Suspect in Shooting of New Mexico State Police Officer Captured

Farmington, NM – Fernando Leon Silva, the suspect who fired 50 rounds at a New Mexico State Police officer during a high-speed pursuit on August 19, 2024, has been apprehended. Silva was captured thanks to the coordinated efforts of the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Marshals Service, and the New Mexico State Police.

The incident began when the officer attempted to stop Silva’s speeding vehicle on Pinon Hills. Silva exited the car with an AR-15-style rifle, firing at the officer’s vehicle before fleeing the scene. Despite the officer’s efforts to pursue him, Silva managed to evade capture at the time.

Silva is now in custody, facing multiple charges including attempted murder and aggravated assault. Authorities expressed relief that no one was injured during the dangerous incident. Chief Troy Weisler thanked the dedicated officers and partner agencies for their work in ensuring Silva’s capture and maintaining community safety.
