Dayton, ME – A fatal workplace accident occurred Monday when a 43-year-old worker was struck by heavy machinery at Dayton Sand and Gravel. The victim, Cory Maddox of East Waterboro, was hit by the bucket of a front-end loader while walking across the yard. Another employee was operating the equipment at the time.
Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate Maddox, but efforts were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Maine State Police, the incident is under investigation by OSHA. No criminal activity is suspected. Authorities were assisted by the York County Sheriff’s Department, Wells Police Department, and other local agencies.
The accident has raised concerns about workplace safety at industrial sites. The investigation will determine if safety protocols were followed. Dayton Sand and Gravel, along with OSHA, will be reviewing the event to ensure compliance with federal safety standards.
