Caribou, Maine – Smoke drifting south from Canadian wildfires continues to choke parts of northern Maine today, prompting urgent air quality warnings through 11 p.m. Monday. Residents in Caribou and across Aroostook County should limit strenuous outdoor activity, especially children, seniors, and those with respiratory or cardiac issues.

According to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, particle pollution remains at unhealthy levels in northern areas, including Presque Isle, Fort Kent, and along Route 1. The warning covers much of northern and central Maine, with conditions expected to improve by early Tuesday.

Tuesday’s weather brings a shift from smoke to storms. The National Weather Service in Caribou says showers and thunderstorms are likely after 2 p.m. Tuesday, with gusts near 23 mph. Rain will continue Tuesday night, becoming heavy at times, especially between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. South winds will persist at 6 to 9 mph, pushing more humid air into the region.

Locals should prepare for limited visibility, slippery roads, and patchy fog overnight Tuesday. Power outages from lightning or wind gusts are possible in rural communities like Houlton and Millinocket.

Those sensitive to poor air quality are advised to stay indoors, use HEPA filters if possible, and monitor symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath.

Air Quality Warnings remain in effect until 11 p.m. Monday. Thunderstorms are likely Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night.
