Bangor, ME – The National Weather Service in Caribou has issued a Special Weather Statement warning of refreezing roadways Friday night as temperatures fall across much of northern and eastern Maine.

Melting snow from earlier in the day will refreeze on walkways, driveways, and roads, creating slick and icy conditions overnight. The affected area includes Aroostook, Piscataquis, Penobscot, Hancock, and Washington counties, stretching from Caribou and Presque Isle south toward Bangor and Bar Harbor.

Forecasters caution that black ice will be especially dangerous on untreated surfaces, bridges, and shaded rural routes, where temperatures will quickly dip below freezing. Even light vehicle traffic may compact remaining moisture into thin, hard-to-see ice patches.

Residents and travelers are urged to use extra caution, reduce speeds, and allow extra time for morning commutes or late-night travel. Pedestrians should also be careful on sidewalks and parking lots, where slippery spots may not be visible.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve after sunrise Saturday as temperatures rise and road crews treat icy surfaces.
