Portland, Maine – Maine residents could be dealing with plowable snow and renewed winter travel issues as a multi-day window for heavier snowfall sets up across the state late next week, stretching from the coast to far northern communities.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, much of Maine falls under a slight risk for heavy snow between Saturday and the following Friday, a signal that at least one organized winter system could deliver impactful accumulations during that stretch. The risk covers southern, central, and northern Maine, including the Interstate 95 corridor.

In southern Maine, including Portland and surrounding Cumberland County towns, the setup favors colder-than-normal air lingering in place, increasing the odds that any system arrives mainly as snow rather than rain. That raises the potential for slick roads, reduced visibility, and delays during periods of heavier snowfall.

Central and eastern areas such as Bangor could see a similar pattern, with snow chances extending over multiple days rather than a single quick-hitting storm. Farther north, including Presque Isle and Aroostook County, colder air already in place may allow snow to accumulate efficiently, especially if storms track close to the Gulf of Maine.

State transportation officials urge drivers to monitor conditions closely, allow extra travel time, and keep winter safety kits in vehicles. The broader pattern supports below-normal temperatures across the Northeast, meaning snow that falls is likely to linger.

Additional advisories or more specific snowfall outlooks are expected as the time window draws closer, with confidence increasing by early next week.
