Bar Harbor, Maine – Large waves up to 9 feet are pounding the Maine coast Sunday, triggering a High Surf Advisory and creating dangerous conditions for beachgoers and boaters alike.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, the advisory remains in effect through Sunday evening, with 10-second wave periods and strong rip currents expected along the immediate shoreline. Areas from Bar Harbor to Eastport may see the highest wave impacts. Officials warn that surf zone conditions could be hazardous, especially on rocky outcrops and jetties.

Inland, much of central and northern Maine will endure a raw, blustery day. Highs will only reach the upper 40s to low 50s in towns like Houlton and Presque Isle, with scattered showers expected to continue through Monday.

Looking ahead, temperatures will climb sharply by Wednesday, with much of the state reaching the mid-80s—except for the coastal strip. Smoke from Canadian wildfires is forecast to drift into the region, reducing visibility and air quality across interior areas like Millinocket and Caribou.

The High Surf Advisory remains in effect through Sunday evening. Residents are urged to stay off coastal rocks and monitor local alerts at weather.gov/car.
