Portland, Maine – Overnight temperatures dipping into the low 30s are expected to bring widespread frost across western Maine and northern New Hampshire by early Wednesday, threatening gardens and late-season crops.
According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a Frost Advisory will remain in effect from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Wednesday. Areas at highest risk include Oxford, Franklin, and Somerset counties in Maine, along with Grafton and Carroll counties in New Hampshire.
Communities such as Rumford, Farmington, Fryeburg, Conway, and Littleton are likely to see the sharpest chill as skies clear and winds calm overnight. Sensitive vegetation, including backyard gardens and commercial crops, could be damaged if left uncovered.
Residents are urged to bring potted plants indoors, cover outdoor gardens, and prepare for icy spots on rural roads and bridges at daybreak. With the early cold snap arriving before peak foliage season, some growers may see impacts to pumpkins, apples, and other fall harvests.
The advisory ends after sunrise Wednesday, but another round of cold mornings is possible later this week as high pressure lingers over New England.
